Cleveland and the George Gund Foundation team up to provide greater access to fresh, local foods for residents in need

Mayor Jackson, Councilman Cimperman and others to announce Ohio Direction Card EBT incentive pilot program Cleveland (July 15, 2010) — Residents who rely on the Ohio Direction Card for their monthly grocery needs will soon have new, healthier options for their shopping - local Cleveland farmers’ markets.  The City of Cleveland, in collaboration with the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and area farmers’ markets, and with the support of The George Gund Foundation will launch the Ohio Direction Card EBT incentive pilot program.  The program will allow Ohio Direction Card holders to use their cards at four area farmers’ markets and receive an extra five dollars to spend at the market. THE NORTH UNION FARMERS MARKET ACCEPTING
SNAP BENEFITS CARDS AT 3 LOCATIONS

June 23, 2010–Cleveland–Beginning in July, North Union Farmers Market will begin accepting SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Cards at its Lakewood, Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland State University locations. SNAP recipients may bring their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to the farmers market and obtain tokens which may be used to purchase fresh, local vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meat products, honey, preserves, baked goods, plants used to produce food at home and much more. SNAP recipients should first visit the “Market Information” tent to receive tokens before purchasing items.

Employment & Family Services (EFS) is one of the four divisions of Health & Human Services under the administration of the Board Of County Commissioners in Cuyahoga.   EFS is responsible for the administration of Ohio Works First/Cash Assistance, the Food Assistance, the Prevention, Retention and Contingency Program/Emergency Cash, Healthy Start/Healthy Families, Medicaid for the aged, blind and disabled and child care assistance programs as well as a variety of other services to assist families in achieving employment.
