GIVE BACK! LEARN TAXES - VOLUNTEER
Cuyahoga Employment & Family Services is seeking volunteers to be trained for electronic
preparation of income tax returns for low to moderate income working families and individuals. The preparation of returns will be offered as a free service beginning in late January, 2011. Tax training sessions will be offered in December, 2010 and January 2011.
Volunteers must pass a test to be certified to prepare income tax returns. They can be certified in basic tax law either through training in a classroom setting or by means of a web-based tutorial called “Link & Learn Taxes,” which is available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov/app/vita/index.jsp. For those not training through the “Link & Learn Taxes” tutorial, additional classroom-based computer training will be required.
Volunteer preparers will be needed for training in December/January 2011 and at tax preparation sessions beginning in late January, 2011 at the following Cuyahoga County sites: Virgil E. Brown Building, 1641 Payne Avenue; Merrick House West, 3167 Fulton Road; Southgate Neighborhood Family Service Center, 5398 1/2 Northfield Rd., Maple Heights; Parma Ridge Library, 5850 Ridge Rd. in Parma; Westshore Neighborhood Family Service Center, 9830 Lorain Ave. and Euclid City Hall Rotunda, 585 E. 222nd St.

Free tax preparation is an important service because many low and moderate income families are taken advantage of with high preparation fees as well as exorbitantly high interest refund anticipation loans. All taxpayers will be screened to determine their eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.
